All eight steps

Step 1 of 8 · 20 minutes

Plan your website

Before buying anything, decide what the site is for. A simple plan makes every later choice easier.

Follow these actions

01

Choose your goal

Write “This is a business website” or “This is a personal website.” For a business, the goal might be enquiries. For a personal site, it might be showing your work or publishing your writing.

02

Name the visitor

Describe one person who should find the site. “Local homeowners looking for air conditioner repair” is clearer than “everyone.”

03

Choose one main action

What should a visitor do after reading? Pick one: contact you, request a quote, browse your portfolio, or read your posts.

04

List your first pages

Begin with Home, About, and Contact. Add Services for a business, Portfolio for creative work, or Blog if you plan to publish regularly.

05

Gather your material

Collect a short introduction, contact details you want public, your logo if you have one, and photos you own or have permission to use.

Before you move on

I can explain the purpose of my site in one sentence.

I have one main visitor action.

I have listed the first pages I need.
